How to Wash a Sweater
Sweaters are a great way to stay warm and cozy, but to keep them looking good, they need a little extra care. Here’s a simple guide to washing your sweater safely without shrinking, stretching, or making it fuzzy.
Step 1: Check the Label
First, always read the care label on your sweater. It usually tells you:
- If it’s okay to machine wash or if it needs hand washing.
- What wash cycle and temperature to use if it’s machine-washable.
- Which kind of detergent is best.
- Special drying instructions or if it requires dry cleaning.
- Knowing these details helps you avoid any washing mistakes that could ruin your sweater.

Step 2: Brush Off Any Dust or Dirt
Before washing, use a soft brush or a damp cloth to gently remove any dust, dirt, or crumbs from the sweater. Brushing from the collar downwards helps prevent fuzz or piling on the fabric.

Step 3: Spot Clean Stains
If there are only a few spots on your sweater, you don’t need to wash the whole thing. Just dab a bit of mild detergent (like Woolite) on the stain and rub it gently with your fingers until it lifts.
Even if you don’t see stains, it’s a good idea to clean common spots like the collar, cuffs, and underarms.

Step 4: Hand Wash Your Sweater
1. Rinse the Sink or Tub
Make sure the sink, tub, or basin you’re using is clean.
2. Fill With Lukewarm Water and Add Mild Detergent
Fill with lukewarm water (not hot) and add a small amount of gentle liquid detergent, about one or two tablespoons.
3. Soak the Sweater
Submerge your sweater and let it soak for around 30 minutes. This softens any dirt or stains and helps prevent shrinking.
4. Gently Wash
After soaking, press gently on the sweater to work out any dirt, but don’t rub the fabric too hard to avoid fuzziness.
5. Rinse Thoroughly
Drain the soapy water, refill with clean water, and rinse out the soap. Repeat a few times if there are still soap suds left.

Step 5: Machine Wash (If Allowed)
If your sweater is machine-washable, follow these steps:
1. Use a Mesh Laundry Bag
Turn the sweater inside out and put it in a mesh laundry bag to prevent it from snagging. If you don’t have a bag, a large pillowcase works as a substitute.
2. Select the Right Cycle and Water Temperature
Use a gentle or wool cycle with lukewarm water to avoid stretching or shrinking.
3. Pre-Soak in the Washer
If possible, let the sweater sit in soapy water for about 30 minutes to help loosen any dirt before starting the wash cycle.
4. Start the Wash Cycle
After soaking, let the machine run on a gentle cycle. This keeps the washing action soft, which helps maintain the sweater’s shape.

Step 6: Dry Your Sweater Properly
1. Squeeze Out Excess Water Gently
Hold the sweater over the sink and press it from top to bottom to get rid of water, but don’t wring or twist it—this can stretch it out.
2. Roll the Sweater in a Towel
Lay a clean, dry towel on a flat surface, place the sweater on top, and roll it up like a burrito. Press gently on the towel to absorb more water.
3. Lay Flat to Dry
Place the sweater on a dry towel on a flat surface, reshape it, and leave it to air-dry. After a day, flip it to make sure both sides dry evenly. It may take 2-3 days for the sweater to fully dry.
Important: Never hang a wet sweater to dry, as it can stretch out the fabric.

Quick Tips
- Spot Clean and Air Out After Each Wear: You can keep your sweater looking fresh by cleaning any spots and letting it air out instead of washing it every time.
- Avoid the Dryer: Heat from a dryer can shrink your sweater, so always lay it flat to dry.
- Stick to Hand Washing If Recommended: Some sweaters have special materials that can lose their shape or structure in the wash, so follow any hand-wash-only instructions.
With these steps, your sweater will stay soft, comfortable, and looking great all season!
